Tawa Fried Pomfret

I’m back with more fish recipes. Today’s dish does not involve any twisted techniques or hard to follow instructions. And all you need is fresh Pomfret fish, the rest of the ingredients are basic and available in every kitchen. According to me, this is the prefect dish for people who aren’t yet very comfortable cooking with fish. Pomfret is a one-bone fish which is high in nutrition and the dish I have presented today consumes very less oil making it both healthy and tasty.


  • Pomfret 2 (750 gms each)
  • Lemon 1 (juice)
  • Curd 1/2 cup
  • Ginger paste 1tbl spn
  • Garlic paste 1tpl spn
  • Turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • Chili powder 1 tsp
  • Garam masala powder 1tsp
  • Nigella seed (kalonji) 1/2 tsp (paste)
  • Egg 1 (beaten)
  • Coriander leaves 3tbl spn (paste)
  • Salt according to taste
  • Mustard oil 2 tbl spn


Clean and wash the fish. Make incisions on it and rub salt and lemon juice. Leave for 15 minutes. Mix all the ingredients listed above and apply the mixture properly on the fish. Marinate for at least 2 hrs in the refrigerator.


Baste oil on a  non-stick pan (with a brush).

You can also cook this in a moderately heated tandoor or pre-heated oven (180 degree Celsius) for 10 minutes (adjust according to your oven heat).

If you want to fry this on a tawa, keep one pan on another (like in the picture) so that the fish is cooked on indirect heat.


Now cover the tawa/pan and cook each side for 5 minutes on medium flame. After both the sides are cooked, remove your fish.

Before removing the fish, keep on high flame till you get that crDSCN2451edispy look.

Serve hot with onion rings and lemon wedges.

Your delicious Tawa Fried Pomfret is all done! You can have it just as it is, with BBQ sauce (recipe coming soon) or along with Naan.
