Kaancha kolar kofta


Thank you all for appreciating my recipes so far. I hope you all are having just as good a time preparing them as I did. I have received quite a few requests to add more vegetarian recipes for our friends who don’t enjoy their meat. So today, LET’S GO VEG!

This recipe is traditionally bengali, just like I am and is very easy to prepare. And here’s a mother’s tip– it’s delicious but also very healthy and full of nutrients so works great for the kids!  If you are a fan of Indian curries, this is your dish! Kaancha Kola is bangla for Raw green banana, which is the main ingredient.

(serves 4)


For Kofta(the balls):

  • Raw banana 4 boiled
  • cumin seeds 1/2 tsp
  • ginger garlic paste 1tsp
  • green chili 4 (chopped) / red chili powder- 1/2 tspn
  • coriander leaves(chopped) 2 tbl spn
  • salt to taste
  • sugar 1 tsp
  • oil to fry

For curry:

  • Potato 1 (1” cubed and fried)raw-banana
  • Onion 2 (medium) paste
  • cumin seeds 1/2 tsp (for tampering)
  • ginger garlic paste 1tsp
  • coriander powder 1 & 1/2 tsp
  • cumin powder 1tsp
  • tomato 1 (medium ) seeded and pureed
    curd 4 tbl spn
  • turmeric powder 1/2 tsp
  • red chili powder 1tsp
  • milk 1/2 cup
  • cinnamon 1” stick
  • green cardamom 2
  • cloves 3
  • bay leaf 1
  • dried red chili 2
  • sugar 1/2 tsp
  • ghee 1tsp
  • salt to taste
  • oil 4 tbl spn


Crush cinnamon,cardamom and cloves and make a paste, and keep it aside.
Mash boiled bananas ,add all given ingredients and mix well. Make almond size koftas and deep fry. Drain and keep the koftas aside.

For curry,heat oil in a wok. Temper with dried red chilies,bay leaf and cumin seeds.Add onion paste,salt to season and fry till  browned. Add ginger garlic paste,stir for another 2 mins. Mix curd, turmeric powder,chili powder,coriander and cumin powder, and add in the wok and fry with little water,till oil comes out.

Add half a cup of milk and as it starts boiling add the koftas and fried potatoes. Add 1/2 tsp sugar and salt(to taste). Boil for few minutes till curry soaks and dries up in a saucy consistency.DSCN1213

Add cardamom,cinnamon,cloves paste,1tsp ghee to your curry . Cover it with a lid for a few minutes for the infusion of the flavor and aroma. Garnish with coriander leaves and serve hot with rice or roti.
